Questions about recording interviews and publishing them

Questions on recording a guest and quoting a client, and on where each piece of a recorded conversation goes.

How do you turn one interview into several pieces of content?

The pieces come from a list written before any editing starts. A publishing brief names every piece: who it is for, where it goes and which minutes of the recording it uses. The guide to releasing one conversation across several channels works through one brief with five pieces: the full conversation with a transcript, an article, a short audio clip, a note to the guest and a note to past clients. The long piece goes up first, so the short ones have something to link to.

Is it legal to record a video call with a guest?

Federal law allows a recording when one party to the conversation consents, and some states require the consent of everyone on the call. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press lists California, Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania among them. When the people on a call are in different states, the stricter rule can decide the case. In 2006 the California Supreme Court held that California's all-party rule governed calls that clients accused a Georgia office of recording. The interview guide has the full list, the case and their sources.

Does consent to record mean you can publish the recording?

Consent to record covers making the recording and says nothing about where it appears. Publishing brings in other rights. New York's Civil Rights Law section 50, for example, makes it a misdemeanor to use a living person's name, picture or voice for advertising or trade without their written consent, and a guest's recorded answers can carry copyright of their own. The interview guide cites both. A short written release, signed before anything goes out, lists each planned use, where each piece will appear and whether the guest sees a draft first.

Can a business broker share a client story without naming the client?

A client story can run without the client's name when nothing else in it identifies the client and no signed agreement forbids it. A name is only one identifier. The industry, the town, the size of the company and the month it sold can point to one business when they appear together, especially in a small market. A detail stays in only if the client's employees, customers and competitors could not pick out the company from it. The guide on turning a client conversation into a public lesson works through an example with a cleaning company.

Can you quote a client on your website to promote your business?

A client's words used to promote a business can be an endorsement under the Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides. Under the Guides the quote has to reflect what the client actually thought or experienced, without being cut or reworded in a way that changes its meaning. When the quote describes an unusual result, the Guides call for a clear statement of what clients generally get, and a payment, discount or relationship the reader would not expect has to be disclosed. A separate FTC rule, in effect since October 21, 2024 (FTC questions and answers), bans testimonials that misrepresent the person or their experience. The guide on client stories links each section of the Guides it draws on.

What questions should you ask in an interview you plan to publish?

The interview plan worksheet sets out about ten questions in five stages: an opening that lets the guest say what they do and for whom, one story with a beginning and an end, the steps and figures the guest agrees to make public, what someone in the same spot might do next, and a closing question about anything missed. Each question asks for one thing and needs more than a yes or a no to answer. The worksheet's story question names a case: "Tell me about the last time this went wrong for someone you worked with."

What should a guest get after a recorded interview?

The interview plan worksheet has a row for each thing a guest can be promised: a copy of the recording, a transcript, a draft of each public piece with a set number of days to reply, the credit line word for word, links once the pieces are live and a note on where the guest may share each one. Each row carries the date promised. In the opening words of the recording, the host names the drafts the guest will see, so the promise is on tape.

Do videos and podcasts need captions or transcripts?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 place captions for prerecorded video, and a text alternative such as a transcript for prerecorded audio, at Level A, the standard's lowest conformance level. WCAG itself is a standard, not a law. In November 2019 Harvard agreed to settle a class action brought by the National Association of the Deaf, and to caption its public online video, including its official YouTube channel. The release guide has the case and its sources.

Does a video need a label when AI helped make it?

Each platform sets its own rule. YouTube's turns on what the AI did: it asks creators to disclose AI that makes realistic content, such as a real person appearing to say or do something they did not, and lists help with scripts, titles and captions as needing no label. The release guide links YouTube's help page.

What is a publishing brief?

A publishing brief is the one-page plan for everything cut from one conversation, with one row per piece. Besides the reader, the channel and the minutes of the recording it uses, each row names the person who checks the piece against the recording and the date it goes out. A status column moves from planned to drafted, approved, scheduled and live. A piece counts as live only once someone has seen it where it was meant to appear.

How do you correct a mistake after a clip is already out?

The source column of the publishing brief lists the minutes each piece uses, so it points to every piece that carries the wrong fact. Those pieces are fixed or taken down. The long piece gets a dated correction note, and the guest hears about the mistake first. The Society of Professional Journalists' code of ethics asks journalists to acknowledge mistakes and correct them promptly and prominently, and the release guide links it.
